Sterling silver is an alloy that contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper, which gives the metal strength and durability. Most sterling items are marked “Sterling” or “925.”

Older silver items sometimes use slightly different alloys such as .800 silver, which is common in European pieces.

Silver items that are sold for their metal value are typically refined back to pure silver before being reused in industrial or bullion applications.
